Sport Pilot Ground School

A faster, simpler way to become a pilot.

The new FAA MOSAIC rule has passed and Gold Seal has the updates for you in our Sport Pilot Ground School. It's the preferred first step towards the FAA Sport Pilot Certificate.

Sport Pilot Eligible Airplanes

Why Start with Sport Pilot?

  • No FAA medical required for many pilots who qualify to fly using a valid U.S. driver's license.
  • Lower minimum flight time than Private Pilot, with only 20 hours required for airplane applicants.
  • A practical, lower-cost path to becoming a certificated pilot.
  • Expanded aircraft options under MOSAIC.
  • Add-on endorsement paths for privileges such as controlled airspace, faster aircraft, retractable gear, controllable-pitch propellers, and night operations when eligible.
  • Sport Pilot is the smartest way to get started for many new pilots who want to enjoy the thrill of flying for fun and recreation.

Is Sport Pilot Right for You?

Sport Pilot may be a great fit if your goal is recreational flying, local and regional trips, flying with one passenger, or getting started without the time and expense of a Private Pilot Certificate.

It may not be the right fit if you need to carry multiple passengers, fly for business, fly in instrument conditions (inclement weather such as reduced visibility), or use flying as a direct step toward advanced ratings and commercial training.

For many pilots, Sport Pilot is the right-sized option, not the “lesser” option. It gets you flying sooner, helps keep training costs under control, and gives you a strong foundation if you later decide to continue toward Private Pilot.

Sport Pilot Privileges and Limitations

Sport Pilot is one of the fastest and most affordable ways to become a certificated pilot. It is designed for recreational flying, simpler training, and lower barriers to entry. MOSAIC expanded what Sport Pilots may be able to fly, but Sport Pilot still has important limitations. The key is knowing whether those privileges match the kind of flying you actually want to do.

Why Choose Gold Seal?

Gold Seal is built for pilots who want more than passive video lectures. Our sport pilot course uses interactive lessons, clear explanations, instructor monitoring, review tools, and visual training to help you understand the material, not just memorize answers.

Interactive Lessons

Forget the old way of teaching. Forget the strings of videos that other courses offer. Think of it. After watching a 7-minute video, how much do you actually remember?

With Gold Seal, lessons use interaction, spaced repetition and strategic summaries, right in the lessons themselves. Every topic is indexed and directly accessible for review. This guarantees that you learn more and learn faster.

Instructor Monitoring

Your flight instructor is a key part of your training. He or she needs to be involved, not just in your flights, but also in your ground training. This is a fact that most ground schools completely overlook.

Your CFI can join Gold Seal for free. This allows him/her to monitor your progress and fully integrate your flight training with your ground school. It's a wonderful feature.

Guaranteed to Pass

Gold Seal has the strongest guarantee in the industry. We guarantee that you'll pass your written test on your first try and have a lot of fun doing it.

Your total satisfaction is our promise. You pass or we pay!

Frequently Asked Questions

MOSAIC made Sport Pilot more useful by expanding the types of aircraft and operations that may qualify under the Sport Pilot rules. The biggest practical change is that Sport Pilot is no longer limited to the old, narrow idea of small two-seat Light Sport Aircraft (LSAs). More capable aircraft may now fit within the rules, and additional privileges may be available through proper training and endorsements. Want a deeper look at the new endorsement options? Read: Sport Pilot Endorsements Made Easy.

Yes, in some cases. MOSAIC opened the door for Sport Pilots to fly certain qualifying aircraft with up to four seats. However, this does not mean a Sport Pilot can fill every seat. The aircraft may have more seats, but the pilot is still limited to carrying only one passenger.

No. A Sport Pilot may carry only one passenger. If your goal is to regularly fly with more than one passenger, the Private Pilot Certificate is the better fit.

Many Sport Pilots can fly using a valid U.S. driver’s license instead of an FAA medical certificate, as long as they meet the FAA’s eligibility requirements. This is one of the biggest advantages of the Sport Pilot Certificate. However, the driver’s license medical path does not apply to every situation, and some pilots may require additional medical qualification.

Possibly, but not automatically. Night flying requires additional training, an instructor endorsement, and the required medical qualification. For many Sport Pilots, daytime recreational flying is still the primary mission.

Yes, with the proper training and endorsement. Sport Pilots may operate in certain controlled airspace after receiving the required instruction and logbook endorsement from an authorized instructor.

Yes. Sport Pilot can be a smart first step. You can begin flying sooner, build experience, and later continue toward a Private Pilot Certificate if your goals expand. For many pilots, Sport Pilot is not the end of the road. It is the start. Sport Pilot can stand on its own for recreational flying, or, in some training environments, it can become your first step toward Private Pilot later. Ask your instructor whether your training qualifies.

Yes. CFIs may join Gold Seal for FREE. This provides them with full access, along with student-monitoring capabilities. It is the ideal way to integrate your ground and flight training.

Yes. When you pass the Gold Seal Final Exam with a score of 90% or greater, the system will instantly generate an instructor signed and dated Endorsement as a PDF.

Yes. Create a free account, and you receive instant access to an extensive test drive. No charge and no expiration. See exactly how it works and learn something in the process. It's fun!

Yes, you can. Any desktop, laptop, or mobile device is compatible. Anytime, anywhere. All you need is a good internet connection. Because of the detail and interactivity, we do recommend a larger screen. It will work on your phone, but you will have a better experience on a bigger screen.

Yes, and our guarantee is the strongest one you will find. Our goal is for two things to happen: (1) you are successful, and (2) you enjoy the learning process. If you complete the Gold Seal program without passing the FAA written test on your first try, we will reimburse you for the cost of the exam, up to $160. (You must take the FAA test within 7 days of printing your Endorsement. This ensures that your knowledge is fresh.) You pass, or we pay! This is a wonderful insurance policy for you.

If you don't enjoy the program, no problem. You have up to 90 days in which you can get a full refund for ANY reason. As long as you haven't completed the course, or downloaded your Endorsement or Completion Certificate, we will issue you a 100% refund of your full purchase price.

If you purchase a lifetime license, this license is paid once and has no time limitation. You will have access for the lifetime of the product.
